(Social cataloging applications)

Library Views

Social cataloging applications have been launching more and more, even phgod

It is a Hong Kong made platform.

Remember when I was picking which to use, the options were listal, Reader2, 豆瓣 and LibraryThing. Lastly, I decided to use the most standard one

LibraryThing

And then a platform I did not have high opinion on,

which now is on the track among others, launched.

Now, publishers have participated in it too, platforms such as iReading and 松鼠窩.

Seeing that, I made comparision with the products again. (aNobii does not state in the faq that data can be input directly from account in LibraryThing. If it was not the information from lifehack.org, I would not do it.

aNobii is the standout among the new products.

Comparing with LibraryThing, the interface and outlook of aNobii are very clean. There are a lot of options for selection (It could be what makes the system slow). It is very suitable for personal use and reading record. I especially like its "subscribe to one's shelf". Because it looks very similar to the new book introduction of a few academic libraries in Taiwan.

As you can see in the pictures above, unlike LibraryThing feed, it lacks the book information, needless to say, it does not provide call number which National Taiwan University and Tamkang University does. It may not be fully suitable for library use for introducing new books. I wonder if aNobii would improve that.

In my opinion, aNobii is designed and developed for personal use. Why would I say that? Because it seems to emphasize on where and when the book is obtained. It contains brief introduction of the book, which is good. However, the title is not consistent. How can "old version" and "out of print" be deemed as title? The data of the book are inflexible. Publish year is used the primary ISBN registered date, whereas not the print year. As books may be reprinted many times, but the ISBN would not be changed, but it is inappropriate to record the new book as old print book. Not to mention, there is no call number. I believe partners of aNobii are book stores and publishers. It is a lot different from LibraryThing.

In these days, LibraryThing is still restricted by what Mr Lam, blogger of Library Views 圖書館觀點, said, "the website was not written by Unicode. It may not be able to display the right language character when the book is written by non-latin characters". Even so, a library has cooperated with LibraryThing recently. The library puts LibraryThing in its OPAC, so that Danbury Library patrons can use the wisdom and experience from the internet's book lovers. It really is a great achievement applying web product into library system (not simply information and resources). It can be expected that more and more libraries would implement it so as to enhance acquisition efficiency and usage of materials quite unknown to public.
